According to an announcement made by senior United States intelligence officials on July 9, 2024, the Russian government has been carrying out a “whole-of-government” venture to shape the outcome of the US presidential election and is casting its lot with Republican candidate Donald Trump in the election.
The officials did not mention Trump directly, but stated that Russia’s current activity, which is categorized as covert social media use and other online propaganda campaigns, is similar to the efforts allegedly carried out in the 2020 and 2016 presidential election cycles. These were times when Russia allegedly favored Trump and worked to derail Democratic Party candidates.
“We haven’t observed a shift in Russia’s preferences for the presidential race from past elections,” a senior official in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declared during a media briefing , which highlighted intelligence on alleged foreign threats in the 2024 presidential election cycle,
Avril Haynes, the Director of National Intelligence, declared in a separate statement on July 9 that Iran is allegedly becoming increasingly aggressive with its foreign influence campaigns. It has allegedly been covertly fomenting protests against Israel’s punitive military campaign in Gaza.
