Charleston, SC elects first Republican mayor since 1877

William Cogswell has won Charleston, South Carolina’s November 21 runoff election and will become the next mayor of the city, the first Republican to hold the seat since 1877.

According to the Post and Courier, Cogswell beat out incumbent John Tecklenburg with 51 percent of the vote.

The city limits span across Charleston and Berkeley counties, with Tecklenburg beating Cogswell by just 153 votes in Charleston County, and Cogswell coming ahead in Berkeley County by 722 votes.
